CAN YOU COACH YOUR CHILD’S TEAM?

Please consider coaching (or volunteering your partner 😊) to coach your child’s team. Our club can only function if one in every eight parents steps up to coach.

You don’t need to have played netball! We have parents from all backgrounds, including ex-AFL and ex-Rugby dads, successfully coaching. The only prerequisites are a love of sport and children.

Coaching may sound daunting, but parents can choose to co-coach with another parent, or Royals can arrange for a teenage player to assist each week.

Our coaches will be provided with:

  • Coach Training Workshops before the season starts
  • Mentors for guidance
  • Access to an app with session plans, skills, and drills

If you are even slightly interested, please contact Lu, our Junior Coach Development Convenor, on 0430 011 886. She would love to chat with you!

JUNIOR CLUB FAQs

How are teams for 7–9-year-olds formed?
During registration, players can nominate friends they’d like to play with. While we try to accommodate one nominated friend per player, overlapping friendship groups can make this complex.

What time will my child’s training session be?
While we aim to schedule training for 4:00–5:00 PM, times depend on each coach’s availability. Your coach will provide details via an introductory email. Sessions typically last one hour.

What should players wear for training?

  • Sports shoes and comfortable activewear.
  • Players may wear their uniforms, though most don’t.
  • A water bottle is essential.

Can I drop off my child and leave during training?
For safety, Royals has implemented the following rules for 2025:

  1. All players aged 6–10 must be walked to and picked up from their training court by a responsible adult.
  2. During training, a responsible adult must remain on the sidelines for each child. If you need to leave, you must arrange for another parent to take responsibility for your child and inform the coach.

These rules also ensure training can proceed smoothly in case of a toilet break or medical incident.

Why do 7–9-year-olds play modified games?

Players aged 7–9 years play with modified rules designed to ensure matches flow smoothly and aren’t dominated by the umpire’s whistle. Coaches from opposing teams often umpire these games to teach rather than adjudicate. Players also rotate through positions to gain experience.

By the time players turn 9, they’ll transition to full netball rules. Research by Netball Australia shows that modified games improve enjoyment, fitness, and player retention.

What do players wear for fixture games?

  • Girls (7–9 years)

    • Royals bodysuit
    • Optional Royals visor (no other hats allowed)
    • Royals socks (white socks are fine if necessary)
    • Nails trimmed, no jewellery
  • Boys

    • Royals singlet
    • Matching shorts
    • Optional Royals visor
    • White socks
    • Nails trimmed, no jewellery

Important: Avoid piercings during the season, as jewellery must be completely removed for training and matches. Recent piercings cannot be taped and may cause issues. Tattoos, however, are fine! 😊
